Why hold an international congress of young disabled people?

The idea of having an International Congress of Young Disabled People has grown out of a shared aspiration to empower an emerging generation of disabled people.

Young disabled people are able to take advantage of a different starting point than older disabled people. Increasing their understanding of what is possible now is important so that:

  • Young disabled people can take advantage of current legal and practical supports;
  • Leaders of the future can emerge from this group in a supported way;
  • The press for comprehensive civil rights for disabled will continue apace in this country and abroad;
  • The press for civil rights across borders can be served by peer support;
  • Political will for support of civil rights for disabled people can be increased through the work of these future leaders and the networks that will support them.
