Manifesto from Rights Into Action 2003

LOCAL PRIORITIES

1. Communication

  • a website updated regularly
  • a newsletter to send out
  • news article produced and sent out in each country
  • use the media to get our voices heard
  • produce an information pack to give to other young disabled people in our local areas

2. Sharing experiences and knowledge

  • it is important for local groups to feed information into networks that are already in place or being developed

3. Using NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations)

  • there are lots of NGOs doing good work around the World to support young disabled people; they should be at the centre of local networks.

4. Training

  • we want support from local organisations and governments in training to set up networks.
  • we would like organisations to remember not to take over the network.

5. Funding

  • we have lots of ideas about what to do but the issue of money keeps coming up! We need funding to make sure it all happens.

NATIONAL PRIORITIES

1. Lobby governments

  • we will lobby national governments to ensure they include issues affecting young disabled people in all laws and development programmes whether social, economic, political or educational.

2. Inform others

  • we must inform others in our countries, heads of government, politicians, media, teachers, parents and other organisations about Rights into Action to gain their support and involvement.

3. National decision-making

  • we must put pressure on national governments to involve young disabled people in decision-making at all levels

4. Funding

  • we will ask our national governments to financially support our Rights into Action network

5. Rights and responsibility

  • we will put pressure on our governments to ensure that equality means equal duties and responsibilities as well as equal rights

INTERNATIONAL PRIORITIES

1. Elect leaders to represent young disabled people nationally

  • we should elect representatives to take responsibility for carrying forward networking and the development of an independent organisation. This organisation will link young disabled people and international youth organisations.

2. Funding to support:

  • development of young disabled people's organisations in all countries
  • the participation of young disabled people in events
  • a web-site
  • publicity
  • a paid co-ordinator to run the organisation and project

3. Future congresses

  • future congresses should aim nationally, internationally and continentally
  • they must be held in different countries to take account of different cultures

4. National governments

  • national governments must allow us to participate in the drafting of new legislation. We are the experts- NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US.

5. UN Convention

  • we the young disabled people of the World demand to be part of the drafting of the UN Convention on the promotion and protection of disabled people.
